Judging by early screen shots, sneak peeks at the game's opening movie and pre-release demos of the game itself, there will be a lot to talk about when Dino Crisis 2 takes its first public bow. It's also plain to see that while the original PlayStation is heading down the road to extinction, this is one title that shows the machine still has enough bite for most game players.The story won't surprise anyone familiar with the first Dino Crisis. The powerful, enigmatic Third Energy is at the root of a whole bunch of new problems, making it tough for ordinary people (those with no guns) and military people (those with guns that don't work as well as they'd like). Reprising their roles from Dino Crisis, Dylan and Regina are cool and effective. In the most current, playable incarnation of the game, players start out as Dylan right after the opening movie.With a few exceptions (a warehouse, a lab), most of the environments are in the great outdoors. They consist of jungles, fields and other terrific places to get suddenly jumped by dinosaurs (Capcom likes psychological terror, folks).And when dinos attack, they do so in wonderful ways. Gaggles of raptors spring out of the foliage, immediately snapping and attacking. Unlike the first game, your character can now use two weapons in conjunction, a nice feature. For instance, one demo had Regina equipped with a large automatic machine gun and a less effective (but more persistent) taser. Use either weapon effectively by aiming and firing, or do a 180-degree spin-and-shoot with the press of a button. Because you can quickly get surrounded by swarms of raptors, this feature is a must. It also lends the game more of an action feel than the previous game.The spin-and-shoot feature, and others like it, makes it easy to spend your allotment of ammo, so use it judiciously. The taser is a welcome backup for various raptors and other pests, but it has no effect on a monster T. rex. For those, you need bullets--bigger and bigger bullets. By killing beasties quickly and efficiently, players are awarded combo points, which can be used for upgrading to bigger and better weapons.Like a bad penny, those pesky T. rex bosses keep cropping up when you are low on ammo, health or both. Stockpiling ammunition and safeguarding both your weapons for boss confrontations--as well as recognising and countering the movements of the bosses--are the only ways to make it. Of course, that's like saying that all you need to win the lottery are the right numbers: easier said than done.With new features and gameplay mechanisms, slick graphics and a quick frame rate, this just might be a sequel that's worth the wait. --Todd Mowatt

As the room fills with poison gas, you and Qui-Gon race down the hall and stop in front of five Trade Federation droids. Your lightsabre hums to life as you and your master block and reflect the hail of blaster bolts, leaving the offending droids in pieces. As your enemies grow to seemingly hopeless numbers, you extend your hand in a Jedi force push. Again all that is left are fried circuits. Leaping over chasms, destroying droid armies, saving entire planets is all in a day's work when you are a Jedi. And we all want to be Jedi... right? In Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace, you assume the roles of Obi Wan, Qui-Gon, Queen Amidala and Captain Panaka as they struggle to save Naboo and defeat the Trade Federation's sinister agents. Exciting battles, terrific sound effects and a true-to-the-movie storyline make this game a treat for any Star Wars fan. The graphics could be sharper, but the overall Star Wars experience is not diminished by this fact. Instead, the gameplay itself takes you away from an immersive Star Wars feel: it's just strange to see a Jedi use a rocket launcher. Most of us would hope that lightsabres would cut through just about anything, but sadly this is not the case--some robots even need to be hit multiple times before they go down. And it's just sad to see a Jedi's progress in an outdoor level blocked by simple shrubbery. The third instalment of the series that redefined the survival horror video-game genre, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is the best Resident Evil yet. As Jill Valentine, one of the original game's survivors, players must fight for their lives while fleeing a city overrun by hordes of zombies and other hideous creatures mutated by a sinister corporation's biotechnological virus. To make thing worse, a near-invincible monstrosity known as the Nemesis stalks Jill throughout the game, which raises the series' suspense level to an all-new high. In addition to the constant threat of the Nemesis, Resident Evil 3 features other gameplay elements new to the series: players can now dodge attacks, perform quick 180-degree turns, and create ammunition by mixing gunpowder types. Also, the "Live Selection" feature forces players to make decisions that affect the story's direction. While none of these additions are particularly groundbreaking, Resident Evil 3 keeps the player in suspense and the action even more intense than in its predecessors, proving that more of same can be a good--make that very, very good--thing in a sequel. --Joe Hon

Lara Croft, cultural icon, cover girl and scourge of wildlife everywhere was last seen buried beneath an Egyptian pyramid at the end of Tomb Raider: the Last Revelation. Despite this apparent demise, Lara returns in Tomb Raider Chronicles, an adventure that features previously unseen episodes from her career. Old friends of Lara who have gathered for her funeral and to swap stories about her exploits introduce the stories.The first level is set in Rome, and is classic Lara; plenty of jumping and puzzle solving with a minimum of gunplay and is reminiscent of the very first Tomb Raider--it even features the comedy bad guys Pierre and Larson from that game. This chapter also serves as an introduction to Lara's various moves and is a real nostalgia-fest for long-time fans.The other chapters have distinct themes: on a spooky deserted island an unarmed teenage Lara must get through by wits alone, there is an action-packed level set on a submarine and, most intriguing of all, Lara infiltrates a high-tech building and utilises various stealth techniques. This is very Metal Gear Solid-esque and possible indicates the direction the series will take in future. (Lara's not really dead? Now there's a surprise.)Unfortunately, the fiddly control system still remains, and the graphics have only been given a slight polish, but to combat this, an array of customary new moves have been added--this time Lara can use a tightrope, for example--but these are essentially cosmetic. The gameplay overall hasn't evolved much, but thankfully the puzzles are less obscure this time round, and the levels are tightly designed which cuts down on the aimless wandering that was common in the middle games of the series.Tomb Raider fans will be very happy with what is probably the most purely enjoyable game since the first. Lara-phobes will take more convincing, but all the hype that surrounds her shouldn't obscure the fact that the divine Ms Croft hasn't appeared in a bad game yet and Tomb Raider Chronicles is no exception. --Michael Bartley

The unabashedly bloody and violent shooter, Quake II that has splattered PC screens since its release has come to roost on the PlayStation. Yeah, it's awfully gratuitous. No, you shouldn't let the kids play. But darn it if this game isn't a sure-fire hit that depends on pure, visceral action. For those who haven't been shaken by this computer megahit, it's your basic cavernous hallway crawl populated by biotech alien bad guys who want nothing more than to make you expire. For your enjoyment, you are given a virtual armory of ridiculously powerful devices with which to destroy your attackers. Expect gore, and lots of it. Surprisingly, disc loading times in midlevel are short, and the movement is fluid with fast frame rates. Also, the control using the dual shock game pad is very well implemented, although for the small percentage of PlayStation owners who bought a mouse for the system, this game is compatible. In fact, Quake II makes the purchase of a mouse a worthwhile decision. Multiplayer games excel, even with tedious split screens. Rather than letting you save your progress anywhere, the game has specific saving points within each level, and enough of them so that you won't be too frustrated. --Jeff Young
